The Balaur & the Dragon Lords

Behind the Elyosโ€“Asmodian rivalry lurks a bigger threat that predates both: the Balaur, AION's dragon empire. They're the reason the Empyrean Lords and the Daevas exist at all - and understanding them is understanding why Atreia is a battlefield.

๐Ÿ‰ In short: the Balaur were meant to be Atreia's guardians. They rebelled against their creator, declared war on everything, and have menaced the world ever since - an enemy so dangerous both human factions had to be forged into gods to survive it.

๐Ÿฅš From Drakan to Balaur

When the god Aion created Atreia, his earliest and most powerful creations were the Drakan - a dragon race intended to rule over and protect the world and its humans. But their own ambition turned them against their purpose. Led by a Drakan who ascended to immense power - Fregion - they abandoned Aion, cast off the name he'd given them, and reforged themselves as the Balaur, an empire bent on absolute dominion over Atreia.

Fregion became the empire's Arch Dragon Lord and declared war on the rest of the planet. It's this betrayal that forced Aion to create the Twelve Empyrean Lords and empower humans into Daevas - champions capable of fighting dragons.

โšก Why the Balaur are different: no Aether

The single most important thing about the Balaur is their relationship to Aether, the magical life-energy that powers all of Atreia. Unlike Elyos, Asmodians, and every other creature, the Balaur are fundamentally incompatible with Aether - they can't wield it, and in the lore they're even vulnerable to it. That's a defining weakness the Daevas exploit, and a big part of why the dragons rely on overwhelming force and their own dark power instead.

๐Ÿ‘‘ The Dragon Lords

The Balaur are ruled by the Dragon Lords - emperors of the dragon race, each crowned in a coronation ceremony held somewhere in the Balaur capital. Their powers are a mystery even to their own kind; in the lore, only Fregion is said to know their true source. A few of the most notable:

  • Fregion - the ascended Drakan who founded the Balaur empire and leads it as Arch Dragon Lord.
  • Tiamat - driven by pure hatred for the Empyrean Lords and the Daevas, she led charges against Aion's forces and would sooner destroy humans than rule them.
  • Other Dragon Lords each command their own armies and territories, making the Balaur a coordinated empire rather than a mindless horde.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Why they matter to your gameplay

The Balaur are the reason the world works the way it does. They're the common enemy that both Elyos and Asmodians must face even while warring with each other - the third side of AION's three-way conflict. In endgame content and the contested Abyss, the dragon threat is woven through the fortresses, bosses, and story beats. When you fight a dragon boss in AION 2, you're fighting the oldest war in Atreia.

๐ŸŽฎ The Aether-vulnerability of the Balaur is why your Daeva's abilities matter against them - you're wielding the one force they can't. That's the fantasy under every dragon fight.
